Jacob Allen has secured cabinet approval for a new advertising and sponsorship policy covering sites controlled by Brighton and Hove City Council.

The policy prohibits advertising for gambling, tobacco, vaping and exploitative financial products. It also introduces product-based restrictions on food high in fat, salt or sugar.
Advertising involving alcohol, other financial products and brands with potentially harmful environmental impacts will be considered case by case rather than automatically accepted.
The council plans to test the approach at between three and five low-risk locations. The pilot is intended to establish whether commercial advertising can generate income without conflicting with the authority's public-health and environmental objectives.
Existing contracts will not be retrospectively changed, and the report does not guarantee a particular level of income. The council will also join the Coalition to End Gambling Ads at no membership cost.
Allen is Brighton and Hove's Labour and Co-operative cabinet member for customer services, public realm and local government. The cabinet decision is subject to the council's call-in period before taking effect.
