Ashley Dalton wins commitment to consider Simonswood waste site for clearance

The Environment Secretary said the West Lancashire site would be assessed alongside other illegal waste sites while an investigation continues.

Ashley Dalton has secured a ministerial commitment that the Simonswood industrial estate will be considered in the next phase of the illegal waste-site clearance scheme.

The West Lancashire MP raised the continuing mound, odour and dust in the Commons after the Environment Agency revoked a permit earlier this year.

Dalton said she and Knowsley MP Anneliese Midgley had campaigned over the problems affecting residents in West Lancashire and Kirkby.

Environment Secretary Angela Eagle told MPs that the Environment Agency was continuing to investigate activity at the site. She said Simonswood would be considered for clearance alongside other illegal waste sites.

The answer is a commitment to assessment rather than confirmation that clearance has been funded or scheduled. Any final decision will depend on the scheme's next phase and the continuing investigation.

Eagle also said that since April there had been 21 arrests, 339 illegal waste sites shut and more than 30 criminal investigations triggered nationally. Those figures describe the wider enforcement programme, not activity at Simonswood alone.
