Sharon Graham urges intervention as more than 200 Motherwell manufacturing jobs face loss

Unite wants the Scottish and UK governments to explore ways to retain production at the neighbouring Resideo and Honeywell sites.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham has called for government intervention after proposed closures at two neighbouring manufacturing sites in Motherwell put more than 200 jobs at risk.

According to the union, Resideo plans to move production to facilities in the Czech Republic and Hungary, placing approximately 116 jobs at risk. Honeywell has also announced plans to close its adjacent site, where a further 91 roles are at risk. Unite says Honeywell proposes to move most of that work to Poole.

The Resideo workforce makes products including heating controls and components used with boilers and heat pumps. Unite argues that losing this manufacturing capacity would weaken Scotland's ability to benefit from the transition to lower-carbon heating.

"Government needs to intervene and ministers must protect jobs and communities," Graham said.

The union has asked both governments to examine options for retaining the jobs and says it will support members as the proposals develop. The closures remain proposed; the reported job losses have not yet taken place.
