Michelle Welsh, Labour MP for Sherwood Forest, has welcomed the Government's decision to order a rapid investigation into Ashfield District Council after she raised serious concerns about the council's leadership, governance and conduct.

In a letter dated 31 October, Local Government Minister Jim McMahon confirmed he has instructed officials to carry out a rapid Best Value Assessment of the council, including the matters she raised, and to report back to him within the next few days.
Jim McMahon: 'Very concerning indeed'
Replying on behalf of the Housing Secretary, the Minister described the issues raised as "very concerning indeed" and said he was committed to ensuring that local authorities achieve the very highest standards of leadership, governance and financial management.
Senior officials have been told to seek an urgent meeting with the council's Chief Executive, and a separate urgent meeting is being sought with its external auditor. A meeting between the Minister's team and Michelle Welsh is also being arranged.
Michelle Welsh: 'The beginning, not the end'
"This is a hugely significant development," Michelle Welsh said. "For far too long, serious questions have been raised about the way Ashfield District Council operates, the decisions being taken and the impact those decisions have on the communities we represent. These concerns have developed over years, not months."
She said the assessment must be "the beginning, not the end", and that she would keep pushing for a full, independent inspection. "This is not about political point-scoring. It is about accountability, public confidence and ensuring that residents can trust the council making decisions on their behalf," she said.
"No council should be beyond scrutiny. No serious concern should be swept under the carpet. And no community should be left without answers," she added. "The people of Ashfield deserve answers."
