Hundreds of thousands of revellers are preparing to head to west London this August bank holiday weekend for the 60th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival, backed by an additional £4.6 million investment from City Hall.
The additional funding package, announced by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, has been deployed to deliver record stewarding, improved crowd management, and enhanced safety infrastructure across the event footprint.
Enhanced stewarding and community safety
Local MP for Kensington and Bayswater, Joe Powell, welcomed the safety measures, emphasising that the extra investment allows Metropolitan Police officers to focus on core public safety responsibilities while stewards manage crowd flow.
“A lot of work has gone into making this year’s Carnival a brilliant 60th celebration, including more stewarding that will free up the Police to keep everyone safe. Look forward to joining with hundreds of thousands of Londoners.”
City Hall’s total contribution for this year’s landmark event exceeds £5.6 million. The funding addresses critical safety recommendations following independent operational reviews, aiming to ensure proper crowd management while preserving the event’s rich cultural tradition.
A milestone celebration
First established in the 1960s to celebrate Caribbean culture and build community cohesion, the Notting Hill Carnival remains one of Europe’s largest street festivals, contributing an estimated £400 million to London’s economy each year.
Organisers and local authorities have worked in close partnership throughout the year to introduce enhanced crowd control measures, upgrade stewarding standards, and ensure the 60th milestone provides a safe, vibrant experience for all attendees.
