Joe Powell has won support from the Prime Minister for developing an independent national oversight mechanism following major public tragedies.

The Labour MP argued that recommendations from inquiries and inquests too often remain unimplemented, leaving bereaved families to pursue public bodies for action.

He linked the proposal to Grenfell, Hillsborough, infected blood and the Countess of Chester hospital and said the mechanism should sit alongside the Hillsborough law.

The Prime Minister said he strongly agreed with Powell and confirmed that the First Secretary had met the chair of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee to examine the idea.

He said he was confident that a model could be developed and restated his commitment to justice for Grenfell residents and families.

The endorsement moves the proposal into active government discussion, but no final design, statutory basis or implementation timetable has yet been announced.
