Susan Brown proposes free Museum of Oxford entry for city residents

Oxford's council leader has put forward a three-month pilot as part of a plan to widen access and strengthen the museum's finances.

Susan Brown has proposed free entry to the Museum of Oxford for city residents from 4 January to 31 March 2027.

The Labour council leader’s proposal forms part of an updated business plan that goes to scrutiny on 13 October and cabinet on 21 October. It is not yet an approved permanent change.

Funding for the pilot would come from the council’s risk reserve. Any extension beyond 31 March would depend on approval through the council’s 2027-28 budget process.

The plan would retain 12 free admission days each year for everyone and keep paid entry for other visitors. It also proposes Friends, Patrons and Corporate Sponsorship schemes and the relaunch of Adopt an Object before Christmas.

Brown said the plan was designed to balance wider free access for Oxford residents with the need for a financially stable future. Oxford Labour is the largest group on the council but does not hold an overall majority.
