Sue Smith celebrates Rochdale album's national chart success

The council-backed Kenion Street project has taken local versions of songs recorded in the town to radio audiences and the official charts.

Sue Smith has highlighted the national reach of Kenion Street, an album of classic tracks re-recorded by Rochdale artists as part of the town’s year of culture.

The 11-track album celebrates music first recorded at the former Cargo and Suite Sixteen studios on Kenion Street. The new versions were produced at Voltalab Sound Studios in the same building.

A cover of Twenty Four Hour Party People by Desyfer and Emma Konnanov reached number 62 in the official UK singles chart and number 58 in the download chart. Other tracks were played on BBC Radio 6 Music, Radio X and regional stations.

The council said the combined audience for radio coverage exceeded 3.5 million. Vinyl copies were distributed nationally and listening events were held at Rough Trade stores in London, Liverpool, Bristol and Nottingham.

Smith, Rochdale’s Labour cabinet member for culture and co-operation, said the project showed how the town’s musical heritage could create opportunities for current local artists. The album was supported by the council, Rochdale Development Agency and Arts Council England.
