An 18-month trial starting on 12 October will test whether extended restrictions improve bus journeys on a busy city route.

From Monday 12 October, the lanes will operate from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week, replacing the weekday morning and afternoon peak restrictions.

The council will assess whether the change reduces delays and improves reliability. The route serves buses including the number 44, which Lothian Buses has identified as affected by delays outside existing restricted hours.

Jenkinson, the council's transport and environment convener, said changing travel patterns and rising demand meant bus delays extended beyond traditional peak periods.

The 18-month trial will include monitoring of traffic, parking and loading, alongside feedback from residents and businesses. Its first six months form a consultation period, with the evidence informing whether the measures become permanent.
