Britain will become the first country outside France to host the start of both races in the same year. The men's race will begin in Edinburgh on 2 July, while the women's event will start in Leeds on 30 July.

The three men's stages will pass through Scotland, north-west England and Wales. The three women's stages will culminate in an 18-kilometre London team time trial from Whitehall to The Mall on 1 August.

That London stage will be the first team time trial in the modern history of the women's Tour. Its route will pass landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral.

Intermediate sprint locations have also been confirmed at Newcastleton, Morecambe and Llandrindod Wells for the men, and at Netherton, Hope and Ladybower Reservoir for the women.

All six British stages will be shown live on free-to-air television on Five, with TNT Sports also carrying coverage.

Peacock said the funding would support both the races and a lasting public legacy. UK Sport said the routes would give communities across Scotland, England and Wales free access to elite cycling.
