The influential business network SME4Labour has endorsed Lucy Powell in the contest to become Labour's next deputy leader.

The group, which represents small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), said its members voted to back the MP for Manchester Central with 67% of the vote. Her rival, Bridget Phillipson, received 33%.

SME4Labour played a significant role in fundraising and campaigning during the general election, and the endorsement is seen as a key show of support for Ms Powell from the party's pro-business wing.

Ibrahim Dogus, Chair of SME4Labour, said Ms Powell had the "pragmatic, pro-growth leadership" the party needed.

"Lucy understands the challenges facing small businesses and the vital role they play in building a stronger, fairer Britain," Mr Dogus said.

Founded in 2015, SME4Labour has become one of the Labour Party's most active business networks, hosting events at the party's annual conference and supporting local campaigns.

The wider Labour membership will now vote to choose the new deputy leader.
