The Labour MP is asking NHS leaders to upgrade the nurse-led Urgent Treatment Centre at Hospital of St Cross so more patients can receive treatment from doctors locally.

His open letter argues that residents should not have to depend on neighbouring emergency departments for care that could be provided in Rugby.

Slinger welcomed the integration of out-of-hours GP services into the centre but said further improvements were needed.

He praised the centre’s nurses and argued that additional medical support would allow more residents to receive care closer to home.

The intervention comes while Coventry and Warwickshire’s Integrated Care Board is reviewing urgent and emergency care. The BBC reported that it had approached the board for a response to the letter.

Slinger is expected to present the letter to NHS leaders later this week. The campaign has not yet secured an approved upgrade or a new funding commitment.
