Rotherham weighs council-run care teams for extra-care housing

The proposal in Joanna Baker-Rogers's portfolio would provide round-the-clock support at two housing schemes.

Rotherham cabinet is being asked on Monday to approve a new extra-care housing model built around council-employed care teams and support available around the clock.

The proposal falls within Labour cabinet member Joanna Baker-Rogers's adult social care and health portfolio. It covers Bakers Field Court and Potteries Court, which together provide 88 tenancies.

The schemes would be registered with the Care Quality Commission so council staff could meet tenants' assessed personal care needs. A consistent team would aim to improve continuity and respond as residents' needs change.

Consultation received 136 responses, with 128 supporting or strongly supporting the proposed model. Feedback also raised concerns about sufficient staffing and training, particularly for support outside normal hours.

Existing tenants would retain their choice of care provider. New tenants would receive core care hours from the on-site team, while retaining choice for additional assessed hours. Cabinet approval is being sought; the new arrangements have not yet been confirmed as adopted.
