Rotherham considers children's strategy shaped by young people

The plan in Victoria Cusworth's portfolio would strengthen young people's influence over borough priorities.

Rotherham cabinet is being asked on Monday to endorse a new children's strategy shaped by young people, with implementation proposed from October 2026.

The 2026-2030 plan falls within the portfolio of Victoria Cusworth, the Labour and Co-operative deputy leader and cabinet member for children and young people. She co-chairs the partnership board with a young person.

The strategy follows work by the Children and Young People's Partnership Board, which brings young residents together with senior leaders. Its membership includes care-experienced young people and groups representing disabled and LGBTQ young people.

A borough-wide survey received 259 responses. Young participants helped choose the strategy's content and the information that could demonstrate its impact, drawing on their own experiences of growing up in Rotherham.

The approach would keep young people involved in challenging leaders and reviewing progress. Cabinet endorsement is being sought today; the proposed strategy's adoption and implementation have not yet been confirmed.
