Badenoch used her closing Conservative conference speech to promise that family homes would not be counted for inheritance tax and that couples could leave a further £1 million tax-free.

Phillipson said the proposal offered nothing to families struggling with social-care costs and accused the Conservatives of “prioritising the wealthiest”.

She contrasted the plan with Labour’s commitment to establish a National Care Service and provide free personal care for older people who need it.

Conservative figures published alongside the speech placed the cost of the inheritance-tax policy at £6 billion. The announcement was one of several tax and spending commitments included in Badenoch’s conference programme.

The intervention gives Labour a fresh dividing line over whether additional public resources should support inherited wealth or the costs of care faced by families.
