Nathan England puts smaller-home options before Telford cabinet

Telford and Wrekin councillors will consider further work on one-bedroom homes on council land and a pilot to redevelop disused garage sites.

Telford and Wrekin housing cabinet member Nathan England will ask colleagues to explore two options for increasing the supply of smaller homes: one-bedroom properties on council-owned land and a pilot to redevelop disused garage sites.

The council says one-bedroom properties account for around 60 per cent of local housing demand, creating a gap between the homes available and those sought by residents.

Cross-party working group

A cross-party working group examined modular housing, micro-homes, building conversions and the redevelopment of underused land.

Its preferred recommendations are to develop options for one-bedroom homes on suitable council-owned sites and to work with Housing Plus Group on a pilot using disused garage sites.

The authority is separately exploring garden pods for young people moving from or stepping down from care, with the aim of supporting independence while maintaining links with foster families.

England said the proposals could increase housing choice and give the council more influence over the homes built locally. Cabinet has not yet approved construction or committed a specified capital sum.
