Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for transport on City of York Council, has welcomed new Active Travel England–funded cycle parking across York city centre, including more spacious stands for cargo and inclusive cycles.
Work is nearly complete on replacing worn stands at locations across the centre, with more spacious parking now available for cargo and inclusive cycles at Deangate — close to the Cross Keys pub — as well as Piccadilly and St Andrewgate. The last two replacements are due next week, and further upgrades have already been completed as part of wider changes at Blake Street.
Active Travel England funded the programme, which updates stands in poor condition at High Petergate, Davygate, Parliament Street, Piccadilly, St Andrewgate, Deangate, Kings Staith, Cumberland Street and Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate.
Ravilious: ‘More people more options for cycling into the city centre’
Councillor Ravilious said the upgrade opens cycling into the centre to a wider range of riders.
“This is an overdue and very welcome upgrade on cycle parking and gives more people more options for cycling into the city centre. Adding inclusive cycle parking means we open this option up to anyone who cycles, accommodating trikes, family and cargo cycles and many others.
“We are working hard to increase options to wheel, walk, cycle and travel by bus, and I’m grateful for Active Travel England’s important contribution to that objective.”
