It's time to champion the businesses feeding Britain's future
Authored by Mike Reader MP and Amanda Hack MP, Co-Chairs of the APPG for Food and Drink
When we think about the backbone of Britain’s economy, our minds often go to the big names – the household brands we all recognise. But in every constituency across the country, small and medium-sized food and drink manufacturers are quietly doing extraordinary work. They’re creating jobs, supporting apprentices, innovating with new products, and giving back to their communities in ways that often go unnoticed.
That’s why we as co-chairs of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Food and Drink, are proud to support and be part of the judging panel for the Food and Drink Federation’s new MP’s Choice: Food and Drink Manufacturer of the Year Award. This isn’t just another industry accolade, it’s a chance for MPs to shine a light on the businesses in our local areas that are making a real difference.
We’re looking for manufacturers that demonstrate excellence in innovation, sustainability, workforce development and wellbeing, and community engagement.
We’ve seen firsthand what these businesses contribute to our communities. To mark the launch of these awards, we were delighted to visit Crosby Coffee – an SME based in Liverpool that actually provides all the coffee enjoyed at the Labour Party Conference. It was fascinating to see firsthand the hard work that goes into their products, as well as hearing firsthand from the founders about their business plans.
Businesses like Crosby Coffee aren’t just producing food and drink – they are investing in people, pioneering sustainability, and enriching local life. Whether it’s a bakery supporting school leavers, a drinks manufacturer embracing sustainable packaging, or a family-run firm driving new product innovation: these are the stories that deserve national recognition.
The timing couldn’t be more important. Our food and drink sector is under real pressure. Rising costs, supply chain challenges, and regulatory changes are putting SMEs under strain. In this climate, celebrating the businesses that continue to invest in their people, and support their communities is more crucial than ever.
Regional finalists will be announced on Small Business Saturday in early December – a fitting moment to celebrate these enterprises. The overall winner will be revealed in January and honoured at a parliamentary reception. It’s a genuine opportunity for local businesses to gain national recognition and inspire others with their achievements.
If you know a food or drink manufacturer doing remarkable work in your constituency – whether they’re long-established or a rising star – nominate them for this fantastic award. Nominations close at midnight on Monday 20th November.
