Labour MP Kevin Bonavia has reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to Ukraine as Prime Minister Andy Burnham visited Kyiv to mark the country’s 35th Independence Day.
The Stevenage MP welcomed the Prime Minister’s presence in the Ukrainian capital, describing it as a powerful demonstration of Britain’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people as they continue to resist Russia’s invasion.
Writing on X, Bonavia said:
“Powerful to see Andy Burnham in Kyiv today, as we mark Ukraine’s Independence Day.
We stand with the Ukrainian people in their fight – Britain is 100% behind Ukraine and our support will not waver.”
His comments come as Burnham used his visit to underline the Government’s continuing commitment to Ukraine, describing the country as “Europe’s protector” and arguing that supporting Kyiv strengthens Britain and Europe’s own security.
The Prime Minister said the UK would remain alongside Ukraine throughout its struggle against Russian aggression.
Bonavia also shared an image of the Houses of Parliament illuminated in the blue and yellow colours of the Ukrainian flag to mark Independence Day on 24 August.
The intervention follows similar messages from senior Labour figures, including Chancellor John Healey, who said Britain would stand with Ukraine “for as long as it takes” and praised the bravery and determination of the Ukrainian people.
Burnham’s visit to Kyiv sends a clear signal that support for Ukraine remains a central part of the Labour Government’s foreign and security policy, with ministers arguing that Ukraine’s defence against Russian aggression is fundamental to the security of Britain and Europe.
For Bonavia, the message was unequivocal: Britain’s support for Ukraine “will not waver”.
