The first duty of any government is to defend its people. This might feel like an abstract point until you watch the footage from the trenches of Ukraine, feel the economic shocks from the disruption to international supply chains through the Strait of Hormuz, or hear warnings about critical sabotage in the icy depths of the North Sea.
