Euan Stainbank prompts new Grangemouth investment push after Syngenta decision

Ministers have opened a fresh round of work with the National Wealth Fund and Office for Investment after Euan Stainbank warned of a narrow window to secure new industry at Grangemouth.

The Falkirk MP raised the future of the industrial complex in the Commons on Thursday following Syngenta's decision to end its operations at the site.

Business minister Blair McDougall said he and officials had met representatives of both investment bodies on Wednesday evening. A Grangemouth taskforce meeting is due on Monday.

McDougall said the meeting would press for faster groundwork so that investment can proceed and the £200 million already set aside through the National Wealth Fund can be deployed.

The £200 million is not new money announced in Thursday's exchange. It is an existing commitment intended to support viable projects and attract private capital into Grangemouth's transition.

The new development is the direct involvement of the Office for Investment and National Wealth Fund immediately before a taskforce meeting focused on accelerating preparation.

Stainbank's test will be whether that work produces an investable project in time to prevent strategically located industrial land and infrastructure lying unused before 2030.
