Derby City Council’s cabinet member for finance, Hardyal Dhindsa, has outlined the council’s financial outlook ahead of the cabinet’s review of its Medium-Term Financial Strategy on 7 October.
The draft strategy, published on 2 October, forecasts a £1.826 million budget gap in 2027/28 and a £1.690 million gap in 2028/29, with a small surplus forecast for 2029/30.
Dhindsa, cabinet member for finance, governance and digital, said the council had strengthened its financial position but could not be complacent.
Pressures remain
He highlighted continuing demand pressures in adult social care, special educational needs and disabilities, and homelessness support. The council says fair funding reforms, multi-year settlements and its own financial management have contributed to the improved outlook.
The strategy assumes Derby continues operating in its current form following the pause in local government reorganisation, and will be updated as further information becomes available.
