In an update published on 5 October, the council said building fabric dating to around 1693 had been uncovered behind modern wall coverings.

Specialist contractors are restoring the Grade II listed properties at 26a, 27 and 27a Market Street, beside Tamworth Castle. The work includes structural repairs, re-roofing, façade restoration and improvements to bring the buildings up to current safety standards.

A careful approach

Individual timbers are being assessed so that original materials can be retained where possible, although a bowing gable wall will need to be dismantled and rebuilt. Dean said the discovery demonstrated why the restoration required a careful approach.

Ecological measures are also protecting brown long-eared bats, including retaining an established roost and installing bat boxes.
