David Burton-Sampson has introduced a bill seeking new rules for the labelling, marketing, advertising and sale of wet wipes.

The Labour MP told the Commons that misleading disposal claims contribute to wipes entering the sewer system and forming blockages.

His proposal would create clearer labelling and testing requirements so consumers can distinguish products that can be safely disposed of from those that must go in household waste.

Burton-Sampson linked the measure to water quality in Southend and Leigh-on-Sea, including the interests of swimmers, beaches and the local cockling industry.

The bill received permission for its first reading without a vote. Its second reading is scheduled for 13 November.

The measure is a backbench proposal rather than government policy and will need further parliamentary time and approval before any new duties can take effect.
