Clive Lewis has called for a reset in the Government’s approach to welfare, arguing that Labour should turn Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s rejection of crude welfare cuts into a new approach that protects disabled people’s living standards.

In a statement on 8 October, the Labour MP for Norwich South backed Burnham’s conference message that investment in people should take precedence over crude cuts to welfare.
Lewis said that principle should also shape decisions about benefits for disabled people.
Backing the Duncan-Jordan letter
He confirmed he had signed a letter organised by Poole MP Neil Duncan-Jordan calling on Labour to reject cuts that would push disabled people into poverty.
Lewis described the moment as an opportunity for Labour to demonstrate its support for disabled people and return to an approach based on investing in their success.
