Abena Oppong-Asare seeks answers after Housing Ombudsman cyberattack

The Housing Committee chair has asked how residents will be protected after a third-party security incident affected the ombudsman's case-management system.

Abena Oppong-Asare has written to the interim Housing Ombudsman after the service disclosed that its case-management system had been affected by a third-party IT security incident.

The Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee said the incident raised concerns that residents' information may have been compromised.

Its letter asks how the ombudsman has responded to the cyberattack and what support is available to people whose information may have been put at risk.

"Individuals who approach the Housing Ombudsman entrust the service with highly sensitive and personal details about their housing circumstances, expecting that information to be held securely and in strict confidence," Oppong-Asare wrote. "It is therefore of the utmost importance that the organisation's response to this incident can rebuild public confidence in its systems."

The committee also wants to know what steps the service is taking to rebuild public confidence after the disruption.

The letter was sent to interim ombudsman Andrea Keenoy on 27 October and published by Parliament on Thursday.

Oppong-Asare is the Labour MP for Erith and Thamesmead. She was elected chair of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee in September 2026.
