When people say you can’t achieve something, I want you to think of my journey. I didn’t come from a political dynasty or have influential connections before entering politics. I grew up above my family’s greengrocer shop, later trained as a physiotherapist in the NHS, and entered politics because I saw vital services being stripped away. I knew I had to act.

Last year, I became the first woman MP for Dudley in 200 years—and its first-ever ethnic minority representative. I don’t share this to boast. I share it because it proves that barriers can be broken. If I can make it to Parliament, you can build your business.

To every woman launching a venture from her kitchen table, garden shed, or local workshop: you have what it takes. But belief alone isn’t enough. It must be matched with vision and action—from you, and from us in government.

Right now, only 2p of every £1 in venture capital goes to businesses led solely by women. That’s not just a statistic—it’s a structural failure. It’s holding back innovation, growth, and our economy.

That’s why I’m proud to support this Labour government’s initiatives, including the new Investor Women’s Taskforce and targeted funding through Innovate UK. But real change will come when you push for it. Be vocal. Be visible. Lobby your MPs. If you’re a female founder in Dudley, I want to hear from you. Invite me to your business, ask the tough questions, and demand answers. That’s what I’m here for.

Too often, women are told to wait their turn. That they’re “too young,” “too inexperienced,” or “it isn't the right time.” We must reject this narrative. You have to believe in your vision and push through every closed door. No one will open them for you unless you knock—loudly.

We also need to get better at networking. Many of us hesitate to ask for help or make strategic connections. When I was campaigning to become an MP, I’d attend events with a list of five people I needed to speak to—people who could offer insight or open a door. You can do the same. Identify key contacts in your local Chamber of Commerce, UK Export Finance, your council, or government. Build those bridges.

Your ambition is a national asset. Whether you’re in beauty, tech, manufacturing, or any other sector, your ideas and drive are what will power Britain forward. So dream big. Think bold. And keep pushing us in government to do better. We’re listening—and we’re ready to act.
