We've moved the dial, here's how

Dear Mike,

We wrote to you at the beginning of the month to tell you exactly what would be happening this month, and how we would be pushing from every angle we have to move the dial on PR. Throughout the month, we’ve asked for your help. Today, we want to look back to one month ago and show you what we have achieved with your support, and to ask you to help us keep it going as we enter yet another month that is absolutely crucial in the fight for fair votes.

[Help us keep it going]

In the wake of the local elections in England, we had a whole team working day and night gathering data and crunching the numbers that went into this report, which has been a cornerstone of our local elections strategy. The outcome of this report has been outstanding. With coverage by reputable sources like The New Statesman , this report has been pushed out to hundreds of thousands of people and landed in the hands of MPs up and down the country, demonstrating exactly how First Past The Post has worked against them.

Not only this, but we have seen pushes from news sources, including The Guardian and The BBC that are keeping electoral reform right at the heart of the discussion, which is only gaining momentum as time goes on. This is exactly the kind of public pressure we need to keep up. This, alongside our behind-the-scenes parliamentary work, is precisely what has led to the incredible success of the third amendment to the Representation of the People Bill, with 70 MPs having signed at the time of writing. This amendment calls for a National Commission and will be considered at the third reading of the bill in June.

Alongside this incredible momentum, Sir John Curtice spoke on a panel at our event hosted in Parliament this Wednesday , joined by academic Tim Bale, Zoe Williams of The Guardian and MP Lizzi Collinge, where MPs discussed the impact of the local elections on FPTP and what a shift to Proportional Representation might look like. “If your vote goes down and becomes more geographically spread, the system will murder you,” Sir John Curtice warned all political parties.

We can’t share our successes without mentioning the impact that the increasingly likely Labour leadership election has had on the campaign. We will be writing to you in the coming weeks to outline our movements and how you can support, but one thing is certain - this is a moment that must be capitalised on. Stay tuned over these next few weeks.

[Support the campaign]

With hope and dedication,

Molly, Campaigns Manager
