Usdaw puts workplace mental health in focus with nationwide day of action

Joanne Thomas says union representatives can help workers discuss problems, understand their rights and find support.

Usdaw organised a workplace mental-health day of action for Saturday, 10 October, with hundreds of activists expected to hold events across the UK.

The activity marked World Mental Health Day and formed part of the retail union’s continuing “It’s good to talk” campaign. General secretary Joanne Thomas said mental health was a workplace issue and that union representatives played an important role in helping members seek support.

Thomas said campaign activity could challenge stigma and make workers more aware of their rights when mental-health difficulties affect their attendance or performance. Where a member needs help beyond the workplace, she said, the union can direct them to specialist organisations.

Usdaw announced the planned events on 9 October. Confirmation of how many took place was not available when this story was drafted.
