The National Cancer Plan marked the first time where leukaemia was recognised in national policy, with a commitment to delivering earlier diagnosis for non-stageable cancers like leukaemia. on what the plan must
However, for the 60,000 people in the UK with leukaemia, it’s essential that this now translates into meaningful policy change. Leukaemia still faces some of the worst diagnostic delays and survival outcomes of any cancer type:
1 in 4 leukaemia patients experience avoidable delays in diagnosis 37% are diagnosed in emergency settings — far higher than the cancer average (21%) In acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), one‑year mortality is 67% when diagnosis occurs via emergency routes
The piece/interview would cover why, without urgent changes, leukaemia will continue to fall through the cracks of a system built around stageable, solid tumours. And what policy solutions must be delivered.
It would focus on the need for practical evidence‑based solutions, including faster testing, better symptom recognition and fewer diagnoses in emergency settings. As well as the need for a Best Practice Timed Pathway for leukaemia, ensuring anyone with an abnormal full blood count is seen by a specialist within one week.
Please let me know if this would be of interest.
Many thanks, Cara
