Uma Kumaran has published an updated UK Arctic Policy Framework in response to geopolitical and environmental changes since the previous strategy was issued in 2023.

The framework organises policy around five priorities: security and stability, climate and the environment, sustainable prosperity, scientific research and international co-operation.
It links the UK's approach to the region with the 2025 Strategic Defence Review and the Government's Defence Investment Plan, reflecting the growing strategic importance of the High North.
The document also addresses the consequences of rapid warming, changing access to natural resources and shipping routes, and the need to protect Arctic communities and ecosystems.
Scientific partnerships remain central to the approach, alongside work with Arctic states, NATO allies and Indigenous communities. The framework says the UK will support rules-based governance and responsible economic activity.
The publication updates policy rather than announcing a single funding settlement. Delivery will depend on decisions across foreign policy, defence, research, energy and environmental departments.
