The award, announced on 9 October, goes to Plymouth City Council as lead partner and accountable body for the Plymouth and South Devon Community Forest partnership.

Funding comes through DEFRA and the Trees for Climate programme. It will support tree planting, woodland creation and the establishment of new woodland.

The programme could enable up to a million trees to be planted over the next 20 years. That is a future ambition, rather than a total already planted.

Briars-Delve, Plymouth’s Labour cabinet member for the environment and climate change, said the funding would provide greater certainty for the partnership’s work.

The investment will also support street trees, green spaces and access to nature within Plymouth. The community forest is a network of planting projects extending from the South Devon coast through Plymouth towards Dartmoor.
