Disability minister Sir Stephen Timms has published a cross-sector account of work by the government’s Disability and Access Ambassadors.
The update covers activity between January 2025 and September 2026 across 20 sectors, including transport, banking, housing, recruitment, retail, energy and higher education.
Reported achievements include national training films for bus drivers assisting blind and partially sighted passengers, autonomous-wheelchair trials at Heathrow and a new network promoting accessible housing and inclusive design.
In banking, communication cards for customers with additional needs have been adopted by several major providers. The insurance ambassador reported 145,834 travel-insurance referrals and 7,402 protection-policy referrals over the past year.
Forthcoming work includes an Accessible Travel Charter, a new rail-industry disability working group and an evidence-based blueprint for inclusive recruitment through government supply chains.
Timms said accessibility was fundamentally about “fairness, dignity and equal participation” and called on employers to adopt the approaches developed by the ambassadors.
