Tomorrow (11th June 2026), the Government will announce the new look Sustainable Farming Incentive, including the funding available for farmers to support critical efforts to restore nature, produce food and build climate-resilient farms fit for the future. The announcement has been much awaited following the closure of the scheme for more than a year.

Vicki Hird, strategic lead for agriculture at The Wildlife Trusts, says:

“It's encouraging to see the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) opening again, particularly as it is becoming increasingly difficult for farmers to tackle the climate and nature crises without long-term support. From declining soil health to the loss of insect pollinators, these schemes will be critical for farmers to produce the food we all rely on while also helping to meet the Government’s nature targets.

“Evidence has shown that sustained and adequate funding through the Environment Land Management schemes is much needed, yet the Sustainable Farming Incentive budget still falls well short of the ambition required. The Government must urgently increase funding to help farmers transition to farming methods that protect wildlife, restore nature and secure the future of food production.”

Across the ELMs schemes, it will be vital to ensure reliable and sufficient financial support and advice is available, including within Countryside Stewardship Higher Tier and Landscape Recovery which provide the largest environmental gains.

Independent analysis

on behalf of The Wildlife Trusts, RSPB and National Trust found that £3.1 billion needs to be spent on nature-friendly farming and land management annually in England to meet the UK Government’s own legally binding targets.
