The July 2024 General Election resulted in a landslide victory for the Labour Party, which secured 411 of the 650 seats in the House of Commons, a net gain of 209 MPs compared to the 2019 result.1 This provided the government with a simple majority of 172 and an effective working majority of 165, after accounting for the Speaker, Deputy Speakers, and non-sitting Sinn Féin MPs.4 The Parliamentary Labour Party (PLP) is composed of 300 re-elected MPs and a large cohort of 335 new members entering Parliament for the first time.1
