Steve Wright challenges proposed cuts to West Midlands fire cover

The FBU is pressing fire authority members and MPs over proposals affecting stations and overnight emergency cover.

Fire Brigades Union general secretary Steve Wright has called for proposed reductions in West Midlands fire cover to be halted.

The union says proposals include closing and relocating Ward End Fire Station, removing night-time cover at Bloxwich, Willenhall and Kings Norton, and reducing overnight availability of second fire engines elsewhere.

Wright warned that fewer available crews and appliances could increase pressure on firefighters and leave communities waiting longer for emergency assistance.

The FBU says it has not received the operational modelling needed to assess claims about the effect on attendance times.

It has begun engaging fire authority members and local MPs, alongside meetings with affected union branches, to develop its formal response.

The proposals remain under discussion. The union is seeking their withdrawal rather than reporting an implemented reduction in cover.
