Bury Council deputy leader Lucy Smith has set out a proposed £12.9 million programme for roads, footways, bridges and safety measures across the borough, which the council’s Cabinet will consider on 14 October.

The proposed 2026-27 programme combines several funding sources, including £4.374 million from the Mayor’s Pothole Fund and transport and highways money already secured by the council.
Where the money would go
The plan allocates £6.6 million to carriageway resurfacing, £1.4 million to preventative maintenance, £1.16 million to bridges and other structures and £1 million to footways.
More than £1.1 million is proposed for road-safety measures, including crossings, school-safety work and interactive signs in communities across the borough.
Smith said the programme was designed to improve safety, resilience and long-term value from the highways network.
The schemes remain subject to the Cabinet decision, and some work would continue into 2027-28.
