Labour’s National Executive Committee (NEC) has elected Shabana Mahmood MP, the Home Secretary, as its new Chair.

In a post on X, Mahmood wrote:

“I am honoured to have been elected Chair of Labour’s National Executive Committee today. A huge thank you to @elliereeves for her brilliant leadership this past year. This party, and this Government, will renew Britain.”

The NEC is Labour’s governing body, responsible for setting the overall strategic direction of the Party, overseeing policy development, and ensuring organisational and financial stability. It plays a crucial role in shaping the Party’s rules, candidate selections, and election campaigns.

Mahmood succeeds Ellie Reeves MP, who served as NEC Chair over the past year, steering the committee through the general election period and supporting the transition into government.

Her election reflects both her senior role in the Cabinet and her long-standing commitment to the Labour movement. As Chair, she will now help guide the NEC during a pivotal time for Labour as it begins its first term in government in over a decade.
