Ruth Jones has written to the Chief Inspector of Prisons warning that Welsh-speaking prisoners’ access to Welsh-language services is not being assessed uniformly or consistently.
The Labour MP for Newport West and Islwyn sent the letter on 6 October in her capacity as chair of the Commons Welsh Affairs Committee.
It follows the committee’s report on prisons, probation and rehabilitation in Wales, which recommended a dedicated survey of Welsh-speaking prisoners.
The committee wants the inspectorate to work with the Welsh Language Commissioner on questions examining both the availability and quality of services.
Jones said the committee’s findings supported prisoners being able to exercise their right to speak Welsh wherever they were held.
She noted that the Government’s response described delivery as a matter involving the prison service, inspectorate and Welsh Language Commissioner, rather than one organisation alone.
The committee will keep the issue under review for the remainder of the Parliament and engage further with the Commissioner.
