Prime Minister Andy Burnham has visited Port Talbot on his first official trip to Wales in office, joining Secretary of State for Wales Stephen Kinnock to signal the government’s commitment to industrial renewal and economic growth across the country.
During the visit on Thursday, the Prime Minister toured the Tata Steel facility, meeting workers, apprentices and site leadership. The trip formed part of a wider nationwide listening tour focusing on economic growth, skilled employment, and cost-of-living challenges ahead of Parliament’s return next week.
A strategy for reindustrialisation
Welcoming the Prime Minister to the steelmaking hub, Welsh secretary Stephen Kinnock highlighted the administration’s broader vision for long-term regional development.
“Welsh Secretary Stephen Kinnock joined Andy Burnham in Port Talbot on the Prime Minister’s first visit to Wales today. The Prime Minister met workers and apprentices at Tata Steel UK and highlighted his ambition to reindustrialise Wales and secure good growth and jobs in every postcode.”
Speaking to local workforce representatives, Burnham emphasised that securing sustainable manufacturing and clean energy transition projects in South Wales remains key to the UK’s national growth strategy.
Transport investment and deeper devolution
Addressing reporters at Tata Steel, the Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering major infrastructure funding for Wales, including honouring the £14 billion pledge for rail transport upgrades.
Burnham also outlined plans to engage with first ministers and devolved leaders at the upcoming National Economic Council meeting in October, where topics will include regional economic partnerships and exploring deeper local devolution models for Welsh cities and regions.
