Prime Minister Andy Burnham has set out a new approach to fixing social care, including bringing forward Baroness Louise Casey’s commission, launching the Big Conversation on Care, focusing on the workforce and beginning cross-party talks.
The Prime Minister said decades of drift on social care must end, with a properly funded National Care Service, closer integration between health and social care, and better pay, training and career opportunities for care workers.
Baroness Casey’s review will now report by summer 2027, accelerating work towards long-term reform that previous governments have postponed.
Writing in The Jewish Chronicle, Mr Burnham said he was using Jewish Care as a model for his social care reforms, highlighting the charity’s integrated approach to dignity, community and high-quality provision.
The BMJ reported that the Prime Minister vowed to fast-track the Casey review as part of a wider effort to build consensus around sustainable funding and delivery.
Labour figures said social care reform remains one of the defining challenges of this parliament, and that the Burnham government intends to treat it as a priority from the outset rather than deferring difficult decisions.
