Reform’s 27-page report said it found no evidence that the party had broken electoral law. It concluded that a proposed £500,000 foreign donation did not take place and that Reform had not commissioned polling paid for by undercover reporters.

The report nevertheless found that two senior figures had made statements that were wrong, careless and, in one instance, untrue during conversations recorded by undercover journalists.

Phillipson said the internal findings did not exonerate Reform or its leader Nigel Farage from the allegations they continued to face.

The Metropolitan Police’s separate investigation remains under way. Channel 4 has said it stands by its original reporting, while the production company involved has also defended its journalism.

Reform’s review recommended earlier identity checks on prospective donors and a requirement for contractors to provide information about their other clients.
