The Derby Promise team shared the city’s approach with delegates at the PASCAL Observatory conference. The event brought together cities and education specialists working on learning, skills and community development.

Dream Fest has involved more than 600 children in workshops, performances and conversations about future careers. The programme culminated in a sold-out theatre event featuring young people alongside West End performers.

The initiative forms part of Derby’s work as a UNESCO Learning City. Its organisers aim to connect schools, employers and cultural organisations so that children can encounter a wider range of opportunities.

Hezelgrave is the Labour and Co-operative councillor for Abbey and Derby’s cabinet member for children, young people and skills. Labour runs a minority administration on the council.

The international presentation is recognition of an existing local programme rather than an announcement of new funding. Derby City Council said the conference created an opportunity to share the model and learn from other cities.
