Our new guide for security workers

We are pleased to introduce our new SIF Guide for Security Workers , which has been created to help members understand their rights around health, safety, welfare and protection at work.

Security workers play a vital role in keeping people, premises and communities safe. However, too often, the safety and wellbeing of security workers themselves is overlooked. This guide has been written to give members clear, practical information about the standards they should expect from employers and clients.

The guide covers key issues including:

• violence and aggression at work • lone working and remote sites • welfare facilities • prolonged standing and sitting • patrolling and site inspections • working outdoors and adverse weather • work-related stress and mental health • manual handling • CCTV, control rooms and display screen equipment • body-worn video and data protection • training and competence • incident reporting • the role of SIF safety representatives

It also includes updated information to reflect the current challenges facing the industry in 2026, including reasonable force, “hands-off” policies, Martyn’s Law, insecure hours, cancelled shifts and the importance of proper post-incident support.

Our message is simple: violence, poor welfare and unsafe working conditions are not “part of the job”. Security workers deserve to be protected, supported and treated with respect.

Please take the time to read the guide and keep it for future reference. If anything in the guide reflects issues you are currently facing at work, please contact SIF for advice and support.

Together, we can continue to raise standards across the security industry and make sure security workers have the voice, protection and respect they deserve.
