Norris renews child-safety pledge ahead of family-court reform debate

The Justice Secretary has paid tribute to Claire Throssell's campaign as legislation to remove the presumption of parental involvement returns to the Commons.

Alex Norris has renewed the government's commitment to repeal the presumption of parental involvement in family court cases, saying on Monday that children's safety must come first.

The Justice Secretary paid tribute to Claire Throssell, who has campaigned for stronger protection for children for more than a decade in honour of her sons.

Norris said the government was determined to honour that work by removing the presumption. His statement came ahead of the next Commons stages of the Courts and Tribunals Bill.

The bill includes the proposed repeal and is scheduled for report stage and third reading on Tuesday 13 October. MPs will have an opportunity to consider amendments and debate its contents.

The reform remains a legislative proposal. Norris's latest intervention restates the child-safety purpose of that part of the bill as it approaches further parliamentary scrutiny.
