Homes and businesses in and around the road were affected by disruption after water escaped onto a section currently being rebuilt and resurfaced.

Muten, Brighton and Hove City Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport and City Infrastructure, said contractors carrying out the road works had uncovered two existing leaks in pipes belonging to Southern Water.

Utility confirms responsibility

He said the utility company had confirmed responsibility for the affected infrastructure and was assessing and repairing the leaks.

The discovery comes during a wider programme of improvements to Western Road and amid ongoing debate over plans for a red-route traffic scheme in the area. Muten, who represents Goldsmid ward, thanked residents and businesses for their patience while the work continues.
