Mid Cheshire MP launches petition to end ‘unfair’ service charges Mid Cheshire’s Labour MP Andrew Cooper has launched a petition urging the Government and local councils to end unfair service charges imposed on residents of new-build estates. Currently 12 per cent of properties across Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich are new builds on unadopted estates. Residents living on these estates pay their council tax and water bills, but that money does not go towards having their roads or sewers maintained, leading to them being stuck with hefty additional charges until those services are adopted. It is an issue Andrew Cooper has consistently raised since becoming an MP, including during Prime Minister’s Questions, to keep it in the spotlight. Explaining why he has launched this petition, Andrew said he was seeking to keep the issue on the national agenda and increase momentum towards finding a resolution which would bring an end to residents being hit in the pocket to fund services many can take for granted. Andrew said: “I have long felt that this situation is completely unfair. “I think it’s unfair that those residents are in a different position to everybody else, and it also creates delays when people are trying to sell their homes. “We must fix this problem. That's why I've created this parliamentary petition. “I'm calling on the Government to create common standards for adoption to speed this process up and get councils, utility companies, and housebuilders working together to fix the issue. “If you've been affected by this, or just think it's unfair, I urge you to sign my petition today.” Andrew intends to submit the petition during the week beginning Monday, 12 July, ahead of the Parliamentary recess. More than 400 Mid Cheshire residents have already signed the petition, and you can add your name here - https://survey.labour.org.uk/mid-cheshire-road-adoption
