Last week, Melanie Onn MP launched the Golden Haddock Awards, a new competition to crown the best fish and chip shop in 2026 in Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes ahead of National Fish and Chip Day next month.
In a constituency proud of its fishing heritage, Melanie says the competition is all about celebrating the businesses, workers and traditions that make the area unique.
Few topics spark stronger opinions locally than where to find the best fish and chips, the debate is more contentious than any political issue. From family run takeaways in Grimsby to seafront favourites in Cleethorpes, everyone has their own go to order and trusted chippy.
Nominations can be made on Melanie’s website.
Melanie Onn, the MP for Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes, said:
“Grimsby and Cleethorpes is very much the spiritual home of fish and chips, so what better way is there to celebrate National Fish and Chip Day than by finding the area’s best chippy?
“Our fishing heritage is something local people are incredibly proud of. Fish and chips are part of our identity here, whether it’s a Friday night tea with the family, a trip to Cleethorpes seafront, or grabbing chips after work.
“We’ve got so many fantastic chippies across Grimsby and Cleethorpes, all with their own loyal following, so I know competition is going to be fierce.
“I’m looking forward to seeing who residents back for the title. May the best chippy win!”
