Lynsey Hamilton has welcomed an inspection that rated Neilsland Primary School Excellent for its approach to raising attainment.

HM Inspectorate of Education described the school’s strategy as sector-leading and highlighted its sustained focus on literacy and numeracy. The 176-pupil school received Very Good and Excellent ratings across the inspection measures.
Inspectors found attainment gaps in literacy and numeracy were significantly below local-authority averages, with no gap in listening and talking. Almost all pupils at key stages achieved national standards in that area.
The report also noted attendance above the national average, widespread participation in clubs and use of the Pupil Equity Fund and participatory budgeting to reduce the cost of the school day.
Hamilton, a Scottish Labour and Co-operative councillor and chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Education Resources Committee, said staff had combined high expectations with individual support for pupils.
