Energy Minister Michael Shanks has welcomed new figures showing that employment across Britain’s civil nuclear industry has exceeded 100,000 for the first time.
The Nuclear Industry Association’s 2026 Jobs Map records 102,600 jobs throughout its membership—an increase of more than 4,400 in the past year—reflecting growing investment in the country’s energy security and nuclear capabilities.
Shanks said the industry was “powering more than just our energy future” by bringing skilled employment, investment and opportunity to communities across Britain.
He added:
“Nuclear—creating opportunities today and laying the foundations for tomorrow.”
The figures underline nuclear energy’s growing contribution to Labour’s ambitions for secure, reliable and low-carbon power, while supporting highly skilled jobs and strengthening regional economies.
The Labour Government has described its approach as a new “golden age of nuclear”, encompassing major projects, the development of small modular reactors and investment in the skilled workforce required to deliver Britain’s future energy infrastructure.
